Shirley Warren Community Garden
Shirley Warren Community Garden is an urban oasis hidden in the middle of a deprived community. Sublime Mosaics were commissioned to build five mosaics for a wall in the garden. In order to involve the local community as much as possible we organised a consultation event where visitors to the garden could offer suggestions for what the mosaics should depict. Because of our expertise in the field of youth and community work we were able to enlist young volunteers who engaged with other community members to tease ideas from them. We then worked with these volunteers to isolate the best ideas and concepts. In the end it was decided that the ‘Four Seasons’ were most popular. As there were five panels it was decided that the last panel should depict a Celtic Cross as the Community Garden is situated on the grounds of a Baptist Church and this best reflected the spirituality of the location.
All of the panels have been worked on by local people from 10 years old to senior citizens.
